We are an ambitious team based in Chicago, focused on delivering eTextbooks more simply and affordably. Most of us at RedShelf were students not long ago and have experience with both paper and digital textbooks. This has allowed us to look critically at how software can be used to create eTextbooks that help students study, learn, and ultimately achieve their academic goals! We provide digital content from the world’s leading academic publishers, consumer trade publishers, self-publishers and a variety of other content creators. Our close partnerships with publishers and college bookstores have positioned RedShelf to bring affordable digital course materials to students and professors like you across the country. Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) technology is accessible on any web-browser based device with no requirement to use a dedicated reader or download an application. With familiar tools such as bookmarking, highlighting, and note-taking, our eTextbook software allows students to study and learn like they would with paper. Our software also allows for digital advances, such as keyword search, dictionary look-up, and 24/7 access from nearly any device.

Senior Quality Assurance Engineer at RedShelf

At RedShelf, we were students ourselves not too long ago and started the company based on the idea that textbooks shouldn’t cost a fortune or weigh a ton. They should be affordable and easily accessible for everyone to use. Our top priority at RedShelf is to help in transitioning the learning community from print to digital course materials and to be advocates for students everywhere.

We are a fast-growing startup (400% year over year) based out of the Boyce building in downtown Chicago. Our goal is to improve the higher education industry by using digital textbooks to help to reduce cost, increase access, and improve outcomes. Also, if you’re interested in wearing jeans to work and eating on a private rooftop deck for lunch, RedShelf may be the place for you.

What is this job?

We are committed to providing the best-in-class e-Reader available and doing so requires software testing. RedShelf is looking for a Sr. Quality Assurance Engineer who can define, develop, and implement QA best practices, test plans, and who can perform other QA assessments of our platform. This position will entail writing automated tests (a lot if them), helping write clear acceptance criteria for development stories, developing test sequences, and training development team members of testing best practices. It is crucial that a candidate can develop and execute pre-release test plans, help manage issues when upgrading current versions of software and work with the development team to promote quality software standards. Possessing the ability to work cross departmentally is a must. The Sr. QA Engineer will work closely with our Customer Support team to replicate and troubleshoot customer issues and bugs. We are looking for someone who can identify the relationships between bugs and the underlying code, and to anticipate and help to prevent problems and roadblocks as they occur. How are your documentation skills? The successful candidate will play a vital part in test case execution including defect documentation and tracking, resolution support and bugfix verification on a regular basis.

What are we looking for?

What’s the most important thing for us? Someone who is passionate about technology and the higher education industry. Candidates should have 6+ years of experience working in a quality assurance role in an Agile/Scrum environment. We are looking for candidates who have a prior background in development (at least 1 year) due to the heavy automation and scripting aspects of this role. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills will be very important because this Sr. QA role is all about finding and solving issues in conjunction with the other members of our development team.

In regard to more technical requirements, we are looking for candidates who have experience in the following areas: Python, SQL, HTML/CSS, JavaScript (Ember, React, and/or Angular), designing and maintaining automated tests for whitebox and blackbox testing, executing REST API tests, Git (or other distributed revision control and source code management systems), and finally knowledge of best practices for the Software Development Life Cycle.

Since education is our game we always enjoy seeing candidates who have a degree in computer science or related field but equivalent industry experience works too! Possessing good written and verbal communication skills and having the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders, including senior leadership, is essential for this position. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of balancing multiple priorities simultaneously and the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the business.

Question of the year: What’s the tech stack?

Here come the bullet points. Ideally, you should have experience with these technologies or some equivalent. We are willing to train the right candidate if you are passionate about the position and our goals.

  • Python, JavaScript
  • Django, Celery, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, Redis, PostgreSQL
  • Ember, Mithril
  • AWS, Docker, Jenkins, Salt
  • Nose, QUnit, PhantomJS, pytest
