Instructional Design Specialist

RoomIt by CWT is looking for a talented Instructional Designer to work with internal stakeholders to develop best-in-class training programs.  This future “RoomIter” must be able to generate compelling training content that supports our business objectives and engages our target audiences. With a true passion for storytelling, adult learning, and eLearning technologies you will help develop our employee’s company and industry knowledge. The candidate must have strong e-learning and virtual training experience and must be able to conduct training courses and assist in compiling training manuals, e-learning, and induction programs. 

Located in our brand new downtown Chicago office, RoomIt is the recently launched technology-driven Hotel Distribution business by Carlson Wagonlit Travel. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of this exciting new business and to help shape our future. This role reports to the Senior Manager of Learning & Development. 

Main Responsibilities 

  • Identify training and development needs within the RoomIt organization through regular consultation with business stakeholders, marketing and Senior Manager of Learning & Development 
  • Works closely with SMEs to write, design and develop content, test courseware and troubleshoot issues that may impact design or established deadlines 
  • Utilizes various authoring and rapid deployment tools to design, develop, author and publish web-based training modules and interactive e-learning courses and videos 
  • Closely work with Operations (Traveler Experience) to define and create a global ‘hotel’ training program 
  • Revise training programs as necessary. Conduct quarterly assessments of training content 
  • Proactively suggest marketing opportunities based on the training feedback 
  • Have an understanding of e-learning techniques, be involved in the creation of e-learning programs 
  • Prepare multimedia educational material such as videos and podcasts 
  • Lead and analyze training reporting information to identify training opportunities 
  • Manage training content within the Learning Management System 
  • Maintain an excellent understanding of CWT RoomIt tools, technology and products


  • Interpersonal skills that enable you to work with people at all levels, motivate others and change people's attitudes when necessary 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills that allow you to inform and advise others clearly 
  • Ability to use training related software packages (Captivate, Camtasia, Articulate, etc.)
  • Strong presentation skills 
  • Data gathering and analysis – proficient at working with MS Excel to review training completion reports 
  • Adaptability and flexibility. Be able to adapt to changing circumstances and environments, and embrace new ideas and ways of working 
  • Proficient in MS Office (esp. PowerPoint) 
  • Facilitation Skills – Excellent facilitation skills both face to face and virtually 
  • Strong project management and organizational skills; ability to coordinate, prioritize and manage several projects at once 
  • Personal commitment to improving your industry knowledge and skills 
  • Must possess working knowledge of adult learning theory and higher-level learning evaluation models (i.e. Kirkpatrick's five levels of evaluation) 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Training & Development, related field or equivalent experience 
  • Train-the-trainer certification: 3-5 years of facilitation experience and/or training role

  • Occasional travel may be required (30% of the time) 
  • Preferred hotel / travel industry experience
