Director of Operations, Morningstar Editorial

The Opportunity: Morningstar is a storied brand with a 33-year history of independence and transparency. As our reach extends globally and our voice amplifies across digital channels, we are looking for a driven and experienced program manager to help scale up our content operations and modernize our publishing processes. 

The Role: This position is responsible for operational efficiency and day-to-day workflows to effectively scale and maintain effective implementation of Morningstar’s enterprise content strategy. The ideal candidate knows how to creatively solve problems, innovate, and develop solutions that push boundaries to create value for Morningstar clients. You’ll work closely with stakeholders to strategize, develop, and see through long-term plans that usher in new levels of productivity and success for Morningstar’s global editorial organization and deliver a modern content experience for Morningstar audiences. To ensure success, you’ll set strategic goals for operational efficiency and increased productivity and manage large projects that improve processes for the firm’s entire content, editorial, and some marketing teams. The candidate must work well on tight deadlines and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, including marketing, research, product, and technology. The position reports directly to the Editor in Chief and is located in our Chicago office. 

Responsibilities: 

Overall Operations 
• Distill complex ideas and processes into a concrete list of priorities for the editorial organization 
• Develop and maintain roadmap with editorial publishing schedules and product and marketing initiatives related to content development 
• Communicate roadmap progress, status, successes, and challenges to stakeholders and leaders and mitigate risks, including via dashboards 
• Identify media platforms for which we can emulate content distribution success; understand how to apply the platforms’ success to Morningstar’s organization and operations 
• Build and maintain relationships with leaders and vendors to make decisions regarding operational activity and strategic goals 
• Lead efforts to introduce and integrate scrum agile discipline into research projects 

Enterprise Content Strategy (Editorial Strategy, Taxonomy, Governance, Metrics) 
• Responsible for establishing standards and consistent editorial processes across ideation, topics, writing, headlines, editing, fact-checking, quote releases, and proofreading 
• Enable editorial teams to effectively maintain content taxonomy and influence decisions on where content should be published 
• Define and consistently track and monitor KPIs related to editorial strategy; report progress with metrics and identify improvement opportunities 
• Collaborate with finance and technology teams to ensure that contractual terms for research and editorial team vendor tools support ongoing business requirements 
• Educate broader research, marketing, and product teams on new taxonomy and governance framework along with associated processes and SOPs 
• Oversee documentation and SOPs for processes related to content creation to ensure consistent, efficient workflows are in place, yielding optimal productivity, performance, and scalability over time 
• Understand and continuously improve all aspects of Morningstar’s content generation processes 

Technology/CMS 
• Establish and own education and integration of content management systems that allow the Morningstar content organization to scale its efforts effectively 

Requirements: 
• A bachelor’s degree is required 
• At least 10 years of experience in financial services is strongly preferred 
• Strong familiarity with Morningstar’s research content and the platforms through which we disseminate research and thought leadership 
• Experience with managing multiple complex projects simultaneously 
• Great attention to detail with the ability to multi-task while working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment 
• Proven expertise with operational excellence and process improvement techniques such as LEAN 
• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills 
• Demonstrated history of executing projects in a complex, fast-moving environment 
• Experience with working in an agile environment is a plus
